Step by step
Mask and prep
Wash the panel, sand only where you need adhesion (follow primer instructions if used), and mask everything you do not want painted. Work in a well-ventilated area.
Test spray pattern
Shake the can for at least one minute. Spray on cardboard to check fan pattern and color before touching the vehicle.
Spray light, even coats
Hold the can 6–8 inches away. Use overlapping passes with 50% overlap. Apply several mist coats instead of one wet coat to avoid runs.
Clearcoat and cure
Allow color to flash dry per can directions, then apply clearcoat if your process calls for it. Wait 48 hours before washing or heavy use.
Pro tips
- Temperature matters—avoid spraying in extreme cold or hot sun.
- Dust is the enemy; a garage with minimal airflow often beats a windy driveway.
- For panel-sized work, read our FAQ on coverage and when to consider professional help.
